Unions open Nagasaki world meeting.

NAGASAKI (Kyodo) About 2,000 union representatives from Japan and abroad kicked off a world congress Saturday to exchange views on labor issues, including the impact of the global economic crisis on the workforce.

The congress at the Nagasaki Prefectural Gymnasium is the third gathering for Union Network International, a global organization of trade unions in service industries, including distribution, information and telecommunications. It is the first time that Japan has hosted the event, they said.

On Saturday, the event kicked off with a two-day women's conference ahead of the grand opening ceremony for the main conference Tuesday, when UNI President Joe Hansen and Nobuaki Koga, chairman of the Japanese Trade Union Confederation (Rengo) will deliver their addresses.

During the event, which ends Friday, participants are expected to discuss the impact the financial crisis is having on the female workforce, and issues related to temporary workers.

In respect to Nagasaki's history as one of only two cities to have been attacked with atomic weapons, the UNI said it will invite A-bomb survivors to discuss their experiences. It will also organize a youth exchange event for local high school students involved in peace activities and those from the Swiss city of Nyon, where the organization is headquartered.

The UNI comprises about 900 unions in around 150 countries.
